The Contribution of Technology to Enabling Social Innovation in Third-Sector Programs: Ehsan Platform as a Model
Keywords:
Social innovation, technology, Ehsan platformAbstract
This study examined the role of technology in enabling social innovation within third-sector institutions, using the Ehsan platform as a leading national model in Saudi Arabia. The study employed a qualitative case study methodology, using in-depth interviews with a purposive sample of seven department managers at Ehsan. Data were analyzed through thematic coding to identify patterns and generate in-depth insights.
The findings showed that Ehsan successfully enabled social innovation through the integrated use of digital technology. Its digital infrastructure, linked to national systems such as Absher, enhanced data accuracy and transparency, while digital marketing enabled the platform to expand the reach of charitable campaigns and attract donors. The results also indicated that the platform identified social needs by analyzing market data and community suggestions, while also addressing internal needs by building trained human capacities and adopting mechanisms that stimulate creativity, such as idea competitions.
At the program level, Ehsan introduced innovative social programs and services, such as the Furajat initiative to support prisoners, the electronic food basket program, smart recurring donation services, and support for orphans and productive families. These programs contributed to meeting community needs and enabled charitable associations to implement large-scale developmental projects.
According to the platform’s reports, total donations exceeded SAR 2 billion, benefiting millions of individuals through thousands of developmental and relief projects. These findings highlight the pivotal role of technology in promoting social innovation and expanding its impact
